Renewing your Saudi driving licence is now handled almost entirely online through the Absher platform. Knowing the exact costs, timing, and documents required saves you time and avoids unnecessary fines for driving with an expired licence.
When Should You Renew?
Your Saudi driving licence expires on its printed expiry date. You can renew up to three months before expiry. Renewing early does not shorten the new validity period — the clock starts from the original expiry date, not the renewal date.
Fine for expired licence: SR 240. Fine for driving with an expired licence: SR 300–500. Both apply if you are caught driving with an expired licence. Do not wait until it expires.
Renewal Costs in 2025
- •2-year renewal: SR 80
- •5-year renewal: SR 200
- •10-year renewal: SR 400
- •Medical test (Efada — if required): approximately SR 150
- •Late renewal fine (expired licence): SR 240
The 10-year renewal at SR 400 works out to SR 40 per year — the best value if you plan to stay long-term. Most expats and residents choose 5 or 10 years.
How to Renew Online via Absher
- 1.Log in to Absher (absher.sa) or open the Absher mobile app
- 2.Go to My Services → Traffic → Renew Driving License
- 3.Review your personal information and confirm it is correct
- 4.Select the renewal period — 2, 5, or 10 years
- 5.Pay online via your Saudi bank account through the Sadad payment system
- 6.Your renewed licence is issued and can be delivered via Saudi Post or collected at Moroor
When Is a Medical Test Required?
- •If your previous medical test result has expired
- •If you are renewing after a licence suspension
- •If you are renewing after a long gap
- •Absher will flag automatically if a new Efada test is required
Important Notes for Expats
- •Your Iqama must be valid at renewal time — an expired Iqama blocks the process
- •All outstanding traffic fines must be paid before renewal is possible
- •Absher will automatically flag any unpaid fines or blocks
- •If your licence has already expired, an SR 240 late fine applies on top of the renewal fee
